I haven’t attempted myself, but it seems like if you don’t use a mounting plate then the sights would be an absolute cowitness with the red dot, which I don’t want. The plate allows the optic to sit a little higher making it a lower 1/3 cowitness. Also, without the plate at least for the shield sight that’s on mine it looks like it ...

The height is the major difference. I own the SF and SFX (a longer slide version of the SFT) and can say the shorter frame makes a huge difference (imo) if you're looking to carry. The other downside is just Canik in general, and that's aftermarket options. You simply won't find as many people making parts and accessories for Canik as you will for Glock, M&P, Sigs, and others. The counter argument is that aftermarket isn't as big a concern for Caniks since they already have good triggers and sights out of the box.
